Reporting to the Director, French Program Partnerships in the French Programs and Services Branch, the Translator is responsible for ensuring timely and accurate translation for a wide range of educational documents and correspondence emanating from EECD. The translator must have an exceptional grasp of English and French. The Translator will also work closely with the Director of French Second Language, Coordinator of French Language Services, Translators, French Editor, Publishing and CNS staff to ensure that the clients’ translations needs are appropriately addressed in a timely and efficient manner. The Translator will work cooperatively and collaboratively with others displaying excellent interpersonal and communication skills; and the capacity to work effectively in a team environment. Translations must be error free and ensure the retention of content, meaning and context of the original material.  It is essential that the candidate possesses the ability to use standard reference sources including la Nouvelle orthographe, the implementation of the reformed spellings and EECD approved terminology. The translator is responsible for conducting terminological and documentary research for the purposes of maintaining linguistic database for reference purposes at the EECD.


Bachelor’s degree in translation is required and must be certified through the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Nova Scotia (ATINS) and/or have passed the CTTIC translation certification exam. The candidate should have 1 year related experience or an acceptable equivalent combination of training and experience. Proficiency in processing information including the use of translation software tools and Microsoft Office Suite is required. The candidate must demonstrate excellent time management skills to ensure that translations are received in a timely manner in accordance with stringent time lines established on the protocol of agreements. The ideal candidate knows how to problem solve independently and within a team environment; and be able to set up work plans that include the development of specific goals to prioritize, organize and accomplish tasks to meet deadlines. A knowledge of media production, communication and dissemination techniques and methods in order to collaborate effectively with media partners. This position requires translation skills; the ability to exercise judegement; and highly effective communication skills in English and French.

Special Statement

The incumbent must have excellent verbal and written communication in both French and English.

Pay Grade: PR 06 – PR 10

Salary Range:  $1,683.00 – $2,414.00 Bi-Weekly

This is a bargaining unit position initially restricted to current civil service employees represented by the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union.
